The Wyoming swimming and diving teams closed out its exhibition season Friday night with impressive times in the Brown vs. Gold intra-squad meet in Corbett Pool.
The Brown Squad was led by team captains Kari Budd and Tommy Grerogy and defeated the Gold Squad 300.5-243.5. The Gold Squad was led by captains Stephanie Ortiz and Brett Henehan.
"In my 11 years here, this was one of the best Brown and Gold meets ever," said UW head coach Tom Johnson. "I knew it was going to be a spirited affair when the women’s 200 medley relay nearly broke the pool record, and the men tied in that same race. It was a great meet with great effort from everyone."
Some of the highlighted times of the night came from Lauren Hewson and Cassie Stelow, Hewson, in her first meet as a Cowgirl, broke the pool record in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2 minutes, 21.83 seconds. Stelow tried to break her own pool record as well in the 50 freestyle. Stelow swam the 50 freestyle in a time of 23.64, nearly breaking Amy Van Dyken’s pool record that was set in 1994.
For the men, multiple event winners were Nathan Fuller in the 100 and 200 backstroke, Sam Holmes in the 1000 freestyle and 500 freestyle, Brandon Fischer in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, Tommy Gregory in the 50 and 100 freestyle, and Kyle Bogner on one and three meter diving boards.
Stephanie Ortiz led the women on the diving boards by winning both events. On one-meter, Ortiz scored 270 points and on three-meter scored 313.65.
"All in all, it was a great meet. We definitely have areas to get better in, but we will continue to do that and get ready for the DU Relays," Johnson said.
The Wyoming swimming team will begin their 2009-2010 season on Oct. 10, as they travel to Denver for the DU Relays.
