ERIE, Colo. – The uncertainty of weather has once again reared its ugly head as the University of Wyoming Cowgirl golf team battled Mother Nature along with the 20 teams competing in the CU/Heather Farr Memorial.
The Cowgirls were one of four teams that finished their second round as 16 teams were forced off the course due to weather and darkness. The second round will be completed Tuesday at 8:30 before the completion of the third and final round.
Currently the Cowgirls are in 14th place, according to golfstat.com, with their two-round total 625 (+49) strokes. They trail the leading Texas Tech Red Raiders with their two round total of 586 (+10) strokes.
“It’s funny, the worse the conditions got the better we played,” said head coach Josey Stender. “We have been playing a lot of golf this fall and the girls came into this weekend with a good mindset and they knew that if they just kept plugging away that scores would go up as the weather worsened.”
Individually, Molly Black leads the team with her opening 77 (+5) and second round 75 (+3) as she is in a tie for 26th place. She is followed closely by Juanita Rico with her two round total 154 (+10) which has her in a tie for 37th place. Meanwhile Sarah Fogerty is not far behind them with her two round total of 156 (+12).
“Sarah, Molly. and Juanita have been very consistent for us all year long and it really showed again today,” said Stender.
“I think tomorrow if we can get off to a good start, we have the opportunity to make a big jump,” finished Stender.
The final round for the Cowgirls will begin as soon as the second round is finished by the rest of the field and can be followed at www.golfstat.com.
