Cowgirl soccer edges UNC

GREELEY, Colo. -- The University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team battled Northern Colorado Sunday afternoon and came away with a 1-0 victory over the Bears. The game was televised on Fox Soccer Channel and can be seen on FSC Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The Cowgirls are currently on a three-game winning streak and extended their overall record to 7-4-2 and 1-0 in the Mountain West Conference. With the loss, UNC drops to 4-5-1 on the season.

"It was a special day for Wyoming soccer to be apart of a nationally televised game," said UW head coach Danny Sanchez. "We got a great second half goal from Emily Layton and really withstood great pressure from Northern Colorado for this victory."

Wyoming pulled ahead early in the second half on an unassisted Layton goal at the 47:30 mark. The goal is Layton’s third of the season and 13th of her Cowgirl career. Layton took four shots, two on goal.

The defense for the Cowgirls kept the game scoreless as freshman keeper Courtney Merkle made nine total saves in the shutout victory. UW has now won five games this season by shutting out their opponents.

Next week UW will take on two conference opponents. First, Wyoming will travel to Albuquerque, N.M., for a game against the Lobos on Friday at 7 p.m. On Sunday, the Cowgirls will face TCU in Fort Worth, Texas at 7 p.m.
