The University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team picked up its first Mountain West Conference win of the season on Friday, stopping Air Force 3-1 in Colorado Springs.
With the win, Wyoming advances to 6-4-2 overall and 1-0 in the MWC. The Falcons drop to 2-9-1 overall, 0-1 in the conference.
"We are excited to get a 3-1 win on the road for our first conference victory," said UW head coach Danny Sanchez. "We played real nice soccer in the first half and defended well in the second to get the win."
All of the goals in the game came in the first half of play. In fact, AFA scored the first goal of the game as Stephanie Patterson scored on a pass from Kelly Bieber at the 6:52 mark.
The Cowgirls came back on the attack quickly and tied the game on an unassisted goal from Jesrrica DiVencenzo at 12:53, her first goal of the season. The second goal for Wyoming came on a pass from Emma Wilson that Nicole Rice was able to net from 20 yards out in the 22nd minute.
The final Cowgirl goal also came on a pass from Wilson. On a free kick opportunity, Wilson tallied her second assist of the game by crossing a ball that Mara Cosgrove headed in for her scored her second career goal.
Wyoming out-shot Air Force 13-7 in the game and took 10 corner kicks, while the Falcons took one.
The Cowgirls will remain on the road at the Front Range Derby against Northern Colorado, Sunday at 5 p.m. in Greeley, Colo. on Sunday at 5 p.m. The game can be seen on Fox Soccer Channel Tuesday at 6 p.m. Mountain Time.
