BOULDER, Colo. – After almost a month of training between meets, the University of Wyoming cross country teams competed Saturday in the 24th Annual Rocky Mountain Shootout.
Both the Cowboys and Cowgirls came away with second-place team finishes with the men scoring 53 points and the women scoring 56. Both teams trailed the nationally ranked University of Colorado as they scored 16 points on the men’s side and 15 points on the women’s side to take the team titles.
The Cowgirls were led by junior Francis Gipson, as she finished in 21st place and a time of 22 minutes, 48 seconds in the women’s 5.8k event. She was followed closely by juniors Emily Byra (22:53) and Alysha Davis (22:57) as they crossed the tape in 23rd and 24th places respectively.
“The women ran a very solid team race as they had a real nice pack going the entire way,” said UW head coach Randy Cole. “There was only 35 seconds between our first runner and our fifth runner, which is what we look for. Now it’s just a matter of moving the pack up in the race.”
As for the Cowboys, they were led by redshirt sophomore Greg Miller with his seventh-place finish in the men’s 8k and time of 25:46. Junior Taylor Kelting followed Miller in 26th-place and time of 26:51, while sophomore Ryan Griesbach crossed the line in 30th place with his time of 27:07.
“The men had a good solid race on one of the most difficult courses we will see this season,” said Cole. “Greg (Miller) ran a great race from beginning to end and was in the lead pack with some extremely talented runners.”
The Cowgirls had a special opportunity to run against one of the best in the world in senior Jennifer Barringer, as she set a course record with a time of 19:25, while her male teammate, senior Kenyon Neuman, took the men’s title with a time of 24:51.
“All in all, we have had a good six weeks of training and had a great opportunity to run against some of the best in the world,” said Cole.
Up next for the Wyoming harriers will be the Chili Pepper Invite in Fayetteville, Ark., on Oct. 17th.
