Cowgirl swimmers win three duals

SAN DIEGO -- The Wyoming Cowgirl swim team had an impressive day, as they pick up three dual wins, and broke six pool records. The Cowgirls defeated Mountain West Conference opponent San Diego State 166-136 and picked up wins over Northern Colorado and UC-San Diego as well.

The Cowgirls improve their overall record to 11-3, and MWC record to 3-3. San Diego State falls to 8-6 overall, and 2-6 in conference.

"It was a good day for Cowgirl swimming to pick up these wins on the road," said UW head coach Tom Johnson. "We started the meet off by winning seven of the first eight events and broke six pool records in doing so. I am very pleased with the results today."

To start the meet, the Cowgirl 200 medley relay team broke the pool record with a time of 1 minute, 46.05 seconds. The next two races senior Aimee Stinson won back-to-back in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:14.35, and 200 freestyle in 1:53.25, both were pool records. Stinson later won her third event of the day in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:00.56.

Sophomore Lesley Young broke two pool records as well. Young posted a time of 1:04.35 in the 100 breaststroke, and won the 200 IM with a time of 2:08.49. Other Cowgirls that won events were Kelsey Conci, (100 backstroke, 58.23), Cassie Stelow (50 freestyle, 24.32), Shelby Bull (100 freestyle, 52.71), and the 400 freestyle relay team.

"Aimee and Lesley were outstanding today. They both swam some of their fastest times of the season today," said Johnson. "Kelsey and Shelby swam very well as well. Our team continues to get better and it showed with our performance today."

The Cowgirl diving team was competing in the Air Force Invite and their scores were added in the final score of the victory over SDSU. The Cowgirls were led by Stephanie Ortiz who placed second in the three-meter with a score of 289.26, and fourth on the platform event with a score of 204.20.

The Cowgirl swimming and diving team will continue to compete on the road next weekend. The Cowgirls will take on Colorado State in the Border War on Friday at 5 p.m., and Air Force on Saturday at 1 p.m.
