SALT LAKE CITY, Utah- In the first of two Mountain West Conference dual meets this weekend, the UW swimming and diving team split against the University of Utah on Friday. The Cowboys defeated the Utes, 175-123, while the Cowgirls lost 165-135.
With the victory, the Cowboys advance to 10-1 overall, and 2-1 in the MWC while the Utah men fall to 0-7 overall, and 0-3 in conference. On the women’s side the Utah women improve to 10-1-1 overall, 4-1-1 in the league, while the Cowgirls fall to 8-2, and 2-2 in the MWC.
“Overall, it was a good meet for us on both sides. The Utah men gave us everything they had but we were able to get the win,” said UW head coach Tom Johnson. “The Cowgirls were ahead at the first part of the meet, but didn’t have enough firepower at the end.”
The Cowboys started the meet off on the right foot by winning the 200 medley relay with a season best time of 1 minutes, 32.62 seconds. The Pokes were led by Marshall Dilworth who won three events in the 100 backstroke (52.77), 200 backstroke (1:53.14), and 200 IM (1:56.60). Other event winners were Eli Bell (200 freestyle, 1:42.57), Kyle Wemhoff (500 freestyle, 4:41.74), Matt Urich (100 butterfly 50.20) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:07.84).
Aimee Stinson led the way for the Cowgirls by winning back-to-back races in the 1,000 freestyle (10:33.42), and 200 freestyle (1:55.38). Other winners for the Cowgirls were Lesley Young in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.80), and Stephanie Vint in the 200 butterfly (2:08.27).
“The men swam very well individually and in both relays. Marshall Dilworth was great, Matt Urich had his fastest time of the season in the 100 butterfly, and Kyle Wemhoff did an incredible job in the 500 freestyle,” Johnson said. “For the women, it might have been the best we have swam yet. Krista and Carol Jones swam the best they have this season, and for Aimee (Stinson) to win back-to-back events was huge for us early in the meet.”
On the diving boards, both Stephanie Ortiz and Tyler Miller won two events each. Ortiz’s score on the one-meter board was 284.77 points, and 292.13 on the three-meter, while Miller scored 309.60 on one-meter, and 320.93 at three-meter.
The UW swimmers and divers will swim their second dual meet of the weekend Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. in Provo.
