Cowboy wrestlers win three duals

The Wyoming wrestling team made its furthest road trip of the season a good one, as the Cowboys defeated the Duke Blue Devils, Liberty Flames and North Carolina State Wolfpack in dual action on Saturday.

To begin their day, the Cowboys beat the Flames 44-3 on a neutral mat in Raleigh, N.C. The ‘Pokes then remained at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh and wrestled the Wolfpack, winning 26-16. Finally, a 30-minute bus ride to Durham, N.C., saw UW defeat the Blue Devils, 36-6.

Wyoming had numerous notable performances, led by five Cowboys who had 3-0 records on the day. Redshirt freshman Michael Martinez was unbeaten at 125 pounds, as were juniors Cory VomBaur (133) and Alex Rieder (165), redshirt freshman Joe LeBlanc (184) and true freshman Jacob Scharbrough at heavyweight. Both Rieder and Scharbrough had two of their victories by fall.

Wyoming is now 7-2 in dual meets this season. Liberty falls to 5-6-1, while N.C. State is 3-7-1. Liberty and N.C. State tied 22-22 following their respective duals with the ‘Pokes. The Cowboys handed Duke their first loss of the season and the Blue Devils are now 5-1. Duke had beaten N.C. State earlier this week 26-22.

The Cowboys will be off from competition next weekend before hosting two home duals the following Friday and Saturday. Wyoming will begin the Western Wrestling Conference portion of their schedule when they take on South Dakota State in Laramie on Jan. 30. They will then face WWC foe North Dakota State the following evening, Jan. 31. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m. in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
