CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – With aspirations of getting to the top themselves in the near future, the Wyoming Cowboy wrestling team got a first-hand view of the best in the nation on Saturday at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA)/Cliff Keen National Duals.
UW wrestled three dual matches and was 1-2.
The Cowboys (4-2) faced No. 1 Iowa in the opening round and lost 38-3. Then, in the preliminary round of the consolation bracket, Wyoming matched up with the Buffalo Bulls and earned a 24-10 victory. Next up for UW was the No. 16 Boise State Broncos, who ended the Cowboys’ tournament by a score of 24-15.
The dual with Boise State showed how far the Wyoming team has come this season, as last year BSU beat UW by a score of 38-3.
“We fought hard against Iowa and didn’t lay down, so I wasn’t disappointed in our effort,” said Wyoming head coach Mark Branch. “Then we came back and wrestled better than we have all year against Buffalo and went hard against Boise State. Overall, we showed some toughness and it was a great experience. The guys got to see some of the things I’ve been talking about all season and some of them made some good progress. Today was not about wins and losses, but about working towards our goal of being better at the end of the season.
“Cole (Dallaserra) had a huge win against Boise State and Jacob (Scharbrough) finally had an outstanding match (vs. Buffalo). Michael (Martinez) wrestled well all day.”
Against Iowa and in front of a pro-Hawkeye crowd, Martinez was the only bright spot for the Cowboys. Martinez earned a 6-4 win at 125 pounds against the Hawkeyes’ J.J. Krutsinger.
The ‘Pokes got better results versus Buffalo, winning seven of 10 matches. Three of UW’s victories were by major decision. Martinez (125) got his second win of the day, 10-1 over Dan Bishop. Junior Cory Vombaur followed suit at 133 pounds with a 9-1 major decision over Taylor Golba. True freshman Jacob Scharborough also earned a decision by eight points or more, 12-4 over Nate Rock. Senior Eric Coxbill (157), junior Alex Rieder (165), as well as redshirt freshmen No. 17 Shane Onufer (174) and No. 10 Joe LeBlanc (184) all earned wins by decision over their Bulls’ opponents.
Martinez saved his best for last and won his third match of the day against Boise State, a 5-3 upset victory in the 125-pound weight class over No. 18 Brian Owen. As a team, the ‘Pokes had three wins by decision and one by forfeit against the Broncos. At 141 pounds, Dallaserra got a win for Wyoming over Cory Fish, 5-3, and at 197 pounds UW true freshman Alfonso Hernandez had an 8-3 decision over Ryan Allen. Scharborough won by forfeit at heavyweight.
The Cowboys will wrestle three duals in one day again next Saturday, facing UW will Duke, Liberty and North Carolina State in Raleigh and Durham, N.C.

The Cowboys finished strong at the Duals against a very talented Broncos team. They'll be a contender eventually; as long as they keep hanging tough against hard opponents (no worries about that Iowa loss- they seem unbeatable this year).
We're looking for people to spread awareness about olympic sports at www.collegefanz.com, the largest college sports site on the net. We have some wrestling, swimming, etc. bloggers already but we're always on the hunt for more well-written, thoughtful, comprehensive material.
I think your blogging there would receive solid coverage for a program that sometimes gets lost in the shuffle (Wyoming). We have Wyoming fans and a page dedicated to all their sports, but no one filling the need for information.
