Cowgirl swimmers win three duals

SAN DIEGO -- The Wyoming Cowgirl swim team had an impressive day, as they pick up three dual wins, and broke six pool records. The Cowgirls defeated Mountain West Conference opponent San Diego State 166-136 and picked up wins over Northern Colorado and UC-San Diego as well.

The Cowgirls improve their overall record to 11-3, and MWC record to 3-3. San Diego State falls to 8-6 overall, and 2-6 in conference.

"It was a good day for Cowgirl swimming to pick up these wins on the road," said UW head coach Tom Johnson. "We started the meet off by winning seven of the first eight events and broke six pool records in doing so. I am very pleased with the results today."

To start the meet, the Cowgirl 200 medley relay team broke the pool record with a time of 1 minute, 46.05 seconds. The next two races senior Aimee Stinson won back-to-back in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:14.35, and 200 freestyle in 1:53.25, both were pool records. Stinson later won her third event of the day in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:00.56.

Sophomore Lesley Young broke two pool records as well. Young posted a time of 1:04.35 in the 100 breaststroke, and won the 200 IM with a time of 2:08.49. Other Cowgirls that won events were Kelsey Conci, (100 backstroke, 58.23), Cassie Stelow (50 freestyle, 24.32), Shelby Bull (100 freestyle, 52.71), and the 400 freestyle relay team.

"Aimee and Lesley were outstanding today. They both swam some of their fastest times of the season today," said Johnson. "Kelsey and Shelby swam very well as well. Our team continues to get better and it showed with our performance today."

The Cowgirl diving team was competing in the Air Force Invite and their scores were added in the final score of the victory over SDSU. The Cowgirls were led by Stephanie Ortiz who placed second in the three-meter with a score of 289.26, and fourth on the platform event with a score of 204.20.

The Cowgirl swimming and diving team will continue to compete on the road next weekend. The Cowgirls will take on Colorado State in the Border War on Friday at 5 p.m., and Air Force on Saturday at 1 p.m.

UW tracksters fare well at Air Force

by Wyoming Sports.org

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The University of Wyoming track and field teams bounced back from a tough Big 12/MWC Challenge and showed improvement at the Don Barrett Air Force Duals on Saturday. The Wyoming teams combined to win nine events.

Both the Cowboys and Cowgirls competed against the Air Force Academy, the University of Colorado, Colorado State and Northern Colorado. In the dual scoring meet, the ‘Pokes were edged out by CSU by only four points, while the Cowgirls lost to CU by only seven points.

“I was very happy with the way we competed today as a team but when you are as thin as we are you need to do the little things right in order to be the best,” said UW head coach Don Yentes. “It was a vast improvement from last week. We had some very good performances today.”

Leading the way for the ‘Pokes was senior Jake Shanklin, who automatically qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships with his winning 35-pound weight throw at 70-feet, 7 3/4 inches, the fourth best toss in the country this season.

Shanklin was followed closely by fellow senior, Sam Lambert, with his third-place finish and toss of 63-2 3/4/ Lambert along with his weight throw, set a new personal best in the shot put with his third-place finish and throw of 52-0.

For the Cowgirl, throwers, sophomore Amanda Aimone won the 20-pound weight throw with her throw of 57- 11 1/4. Two freshman followed her, as Elisa Etchemendy and Kaylee Beddes finished in 10th and 11th respectively.

“Jake and Sam had a solid day today to lead our throwers with Sam just missing the provisional mark by only nine-inches,” said assistant coach Paul Barrett. “Amanda was a little unlucky as she had two of her best throws called back as she fouled during them, but overall a very solid day for our throwers.”

The sprinters and distance runners had a very strong day. The four titles went to freshman Lindsey Simmons (200-meter), sophomore Afiya Walker (800-meter), junior Emily Higgins (1-mile) and junior Jennifer Schmitz (60-meter hurdles). All four titles were won by one-second or less with Walker setting her personal best with a time of 2 minutes, 18.37 seconds in the 800-meter. Freshman Chantel Bernabo also had a very strong day for the Cowgirls, as she placed third in both the 60-meter dash and in the 200-meter dash.

Junior Kekoa Chavez led the Cowboys in the 400 in 48.78, the sixth best in UW history. Three sophomores set new personal bests, as Seth Grossman placed second in the 1-mile run, along with Taylor Kelting with his fifth-place finish in the same race. Greg Miller finished second in the 3,000-meter run with his time of 8:36.51.

“It was a very balanced day for our sprinters and distance runners today,” said Yentes. “I was very happy with the way they competed against some of the teams we will see at conference.”

The jumpers for the ‘Pokes were led by defending MWC champion, sophomore Jeremiah James, as he finished with two first-place finishes in the long jump and the triple jump. Junior John Alderson was just behind James as he finished second in the long jump and third in the triple jump.

For the Cowgirls, junior Johnna Jeffries was two-inches from tying her personal best in the high jump as she ended the day in fourth-place and a mark of 5’-5.

“Johnna was very close today as she clipped her heels twice on the bar at 5-7,” said assistant coach Quincy Howe. “Jeremiah’s marks were solid, but not where he was before the break, but it was still nice to see him compete and win even without his best stuff.”

The multi-eventers had their first opportunity to show what they can do as two Cowboys and one Cowgirl took to the field. Junior Jay Petsch entered the second-day of competition in first-place after setting four personal best’s in the first-four events. Petsch ended the day in second-place with an astounding 4,961 points, third best all-time. He finished first in three of the seven events and in the top-three in five of the seven. Freshman Henry Ferreira competed in his first heptathlon in almost two-years and finished in sixth-place with 3,906 points.

Sophomore Britney Jackson was the lone Cowgirl and finished the five-event pentathlon in fourth-place with her 3,186 total points, good for third-best all-time at UW. It culminated Jackson’s first-ever multi-event day and a solid performance for the Cowgirls.

“Jay ended with six personal best’s and a very good start to the season as he still has plenty of room to improve,” said Howe. “For Henry and Britney, it was nice to get the first one out of the way and under their belt as it’s quite the accomplishment in itself to finish a heptathlon or pentathlon.”

The Cowboys and Cowgirls will travel back down to Colorado Springs, as they will compete once again at the Air Force Invitational Feb. 13-14.

Cowboys topple North Dakota State

by Wyoming Sports.org

The Wyoming wrestling team moved to 2-0 in Western Wrestling Conference action with a 31-6 win over North Dakota State in the UniWyo Sports Complex.

The Cowboys, 9-2 in duals overall, won seven matches for the second straight night. Wyoming defeated South Dakota State 38-7 Friday night.

The Bison,1-2 in the WWC, 3-8-1 overall, have the Cowboys more of a tussle than the Jackrabbits the night before. Wyoming still picked up some extra points with three of the seven wins with bonus points, along with a forfeit victory.

No. 7-ranked Joe LeBlanc scored a technical fall for the ‘Pokes at 184 pounds, while fellow redshirt freshmen Michael Martinez (125) and No. 19 Shane Onufer (174) got major decision wins. Junior Cory VomBaur (133), sophomore Cole Dallaserra (141), senior Eric Coxbill (157) and freshman Alfonso Hernandez (197) all notched decisions in favor of Wyoming.

“The competition level was up tonight and you could tell that they (NDSU) had been in some battles,” said Wyoming head coach Mark Branch. “I’m pleased to get a dual win, but our youth showed in some spots and we have a lot of room to still improve as a team.

“We have got to start chain wrestling, meaning stringing two or three things together during our matches. Tonight, everything was in bursts. Guys are holding back because they don’t want to get tired. This team just needs to trust in their conditioning.”

Martinez got things off on the right foot for UW to begin the dual when he wore down NDSU’s Justin Solberg at 125 pounds and earned a 17-7 major decision. Wyoming’s lightweight got better as the match went on, scoring three, third period takedowns, on the way to his ninth straight win. He is now 29-7 this season.

Next, VomBaur rode a first period takedown to a 3-0 win at the 133-pound weight class, and Dallaserra got a deciding takedown 16 seconds into the match in his 4-1 win at 141. UW led 10-0 after three matches.
In a grinding match that was scoreless through two periods, Wyoming’s Chase Smith lost at 149 pounds due to a third period nearfall by NDSU’s Ryan Adams. Adams’ 3-0 victory got the Bison on the board, down 10-3.

The 157-pound match was a back-and-forth affair between the Cowboys’ Coxbill and the Bison’s Vince Salminen. There were three ties and two lead changes, before Coxbill prevailed 13-10, thanks to five takedowns. The deciding takedown came with 12 seconds remaining in the match and Coxbill clinging to a 10-9 lead.

NDSU would then pull to within 13-6 of UW, after Bison freshman Tyler Johnson beat Wyoming junior Alex Rieder at 165 pounds in a one-minute, sudden-victory overtime decision by a score of 6-4.

Onufer completely dominated Adam Aho at 174 pounds and earned a 15-2 major decision victory. That win bumped Onufer’s team-best season record to 33-8. Wyoming led 17-6 and never looked back.

The Cowboys’ LeBlanc was the winner at 184 pounds by a long shot, getting a technical fall over Kenny Moenkedick, 20-4 at 5:18 in the third period. Leading 14-4 heading into that period and needing five points for the technical fall, LeBlanc would seal the win and score six points in just 18 seconds by virtue of an escape, takedown, nearfall and riding time. He now has a season record of 32-5.

The final match wrestled on the evening saw UW’s Hernandez overcome an early takedown at 197 pounds, get a late, third period takedown of his own, and hang on to win a 5-4 decision. NDSU’s forfeit at heavyweight finalized the team score at 31-6 in favor of Wyoming.

The Cowboys will head back on the road this coming Thursday and Friday, Feb. 5 and 6, for a pair of dual matches against Simon Fraser (B.C., Canada) and Portland State, respectively. The Simon Fraser match will take place in Auburn, Wash., and the Portland State dual will be in Portland, Ore.

The Wyoming wrestling team has gotten to know first-year head coach Mark Branch very well in their short time together.

After easily disposing of South Dakota State, 38-7 Friday night in their Western Wrestling Conference opener at the UniWyo Sports Complex, the Cowboys knew better than getting ahead of themselves.

Yes, it was a good match to return home to, but by no means was a great night or effort.

At least in their coach’s eyes.

“He always has something for us to work on; he is never satisfied with our performance,” Wyoming redshirt freshman 184-pounder Joe LeBlanc said. “Even out here, he is going to give us a list of stuff we have to change, even with the score 38-7. But that is what makes us better, just that attitude.”

The young Cowboys are better, 8-2 in duals this season. On cue, Branch was just so-so in evaluating his team’s performance over South Dakota State (0-2, 7-7-1)

“As a team, it was inconsistent,” Branch said. “Some guys came out and they looked fired up, they looked glad to be back home and they came out at the whistle firing away,” Branch said. “But it was inconsistent. When you look at the team, there were a lot of the good and bad areas. There were some areas where I was a little distressed at. We have to correct that problem.”

Wyoming won seven of the nine matches wrestled with two falls, two technical falls and one major decision. Even in victory, the Cowboys know they can get better.

“Coach Branch is really good to look at what we need to improve on, which is always good because we can always get better,” Wyoming senior 157-pounder Eric Coxbill said. “Everybody is coming in and working hard and we’re improving.”

Coxbill earned his coach’s praise with how he came out, with a takedown in seven seconds en route to a pin of SDSU’s Marc Wermersen in 1 minute, 51 seconds.

“I was so excited, we haven’t wrestled at home forever. The family was here, my buddies. I felt good. I just came out and exploded,” said Coxbill, a Wright native.

The Cowboys hadn’t wrestled at home since the Stanford dual and Cowboy Open on Nov. 14-15.

“We definitely had a long road trip and we got a lot more,” Coxbill said. “It’s fun to come home.”

Coxbill is getting more comfortable at 157 pounds, moving down from 165. He is now 17-10 on the season.

“I made the cut down to 157 and the more that I make it, it seems the better I wrestle at it,” Coxbill said. “I got my feet going and got a fast takedown and there it went.”

LeBlanc, ranked seventh in the country, is now 31-5. He was also excited to be at home, earning a quick pin as well, sticking the Jackrabbits’ Zack Blindert in 1:38.

“It was a good match. It was my first match in front of the home crowd, so that was fun,” LeBlanc said.

Also earning dominating wins were redshirt freshman Michael Martinez (28-7), a 17-1 technical fall over Alan Marvin; junior Alex Rieder (24-12), a 19-0 technical fall over Westin Ginther and redshirt freshman Chase Smith (21-15), a 10-1 major decision over Nick Flynn.

Also for the Cowboys, sophomore 141-pounder Cole Dallaserra (16-10) was a 9-2 winner over Dustin Walraven and redshirt freshman Shane Onufer (32-8) gained an 8-5 decision over Scott Elliott. Junior Cory VomBauer earned a forfeit win at 133 pounds for Wyoming.

“Our team has just developed so much since the beginning of the season,” LeBlanc said. “We have gotten better. Coach Branch goes back every week and looks at what we did wrong and we correct our mistakes.”

With the season down to eight more duals and the WWC and NCAA championships in a little over a month, Coxbill said they are progressing in the right direction.

“The conditioning is getting better and everybody is pushing hard at a seven-minute pace,“ Coxbill said. “We’re just getting better and better, day after day."

Branch agrees to a certain extent. He said he believes his team turned the corner after the Christmas break and came back energized and started seeing the progress that they have made. More progress, however, is needed.

“Individually, they felt like were improving and they felt like they were better wrestlers,” he said. “What is scary, when you come out and a few of them were flat, you don’t want to step back at this point of the year. We’re at the point of the year when we need to start climbing and gaining and keep building our confidence. We got a long ways to go.”

The Cowboys will return to action Saturday night in another WWC dual, as they host North Dakota State at 7 p.m.

UW wrestlers back home; open WWC slate

The Western Wrestling Conference portion of their schedule begins this weekend at home for the Wyoming wrestling team, as the Cowboys host South Dakota State on Friday and North Dakota State on Saturday.

Both duals will begin at 7 p.m. in the UniWyo Sports Complex. Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $3 for kids 18 and younger, while UW students are free with a valid ID.

The ‘Pokes are 7-2 in dual action so far this season and are coming off of a one-day East Coast sweep of Duke, Liberty and North Carolina State two weeks ago. Having wrestled a very full slate of tournaments and duals, six Cowboys have reached the 20-win plateau this season, including two that have broken the 30-win barrier.

Leading the team in wins is No. 19-ranked Shane Onufer is 31-8 at 174 pounds, while No. 7 Joe LeBlanc is 30-5 at 184 pounds. Michael Martinez is 27-7 at 125 pounds, Alex Rieder has a 23-12 record at 165/174 pounds, Jacob Scharbrough is 20-12 at heavyweight and Chase Smith has a 20-15 mark at 149 pounds. LeBlanc, Martinez, Onufer and Smith are all redshirt freshmen, while Rieder is a junior and Scharbrough is a true freshman.

Martinez has a winning streak of seven straight matches. Included in that streak is a victory over No. 18 Brian Owen of Boise State, three wins by major decision and one by forfeit.

The Jackrabbits are 7-6-1 overall in dual action this season, 0-1-0 in the WWC. They matched up with Northern Colorado last Sunday and fell to the Bears in Brookings, S.D., 29-15. SDSU is led by No. 16 Tyler Sorenson (7-0) at 197 pounds and Jason Stripling (25-9) at heavyweight.

Last season, the Cowboys defeated the Jackrabbits, 26-16 in Brookings. Current UW starters, senior Eric Coxbill and sophomore Cole Dallaserra both won close decisions in that match-up.

The Bison are 2-7-1 overall in dual action this season, 0-1-0 in the WWC. They also wrestled Northern Colorado this past weekend, losing a tight match on Saturday to the Bears, 18-16 in Fargo. NDSU has been led by Ryan Adams (19-8) at 149 pounds and Tyler Johnson (13-3) at 165 pounds.

The Bison defeated the Cowboys last season in Fargo by a score of 29-10. Wyoming’s Coxbill and Dallaserra also won their matches in that dual.

This weekend's matches are the first at home for th ecowboys since they host Styanford on Nov. 14 and the cowboy Open on Nov. 15.

As with all of Wyoming’s home duals in 2008-09, Friday and Saturday’s match-ups will be streamed live online at WyomingAthletics.com, via UW’s multimedia subscription service, Wyoming All-Access. Cost is $7.95 a month or $59.95 for the school year, and the fee includes coverage of a multitude of UW events and features.

UW hockey hosts Air Force

The University of Wyoming hockey club, fresh off a disappointing showing against the University of Colorado, returns to the ice this weekend against the United States Air Force Academy club squad.

The Cowboys (11-9) and Falcons (9-4) meet at 9:30 p.m. Friday at the Laramie Community Ice Arena and at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Taco John's Events Center in Cheyenne. The teams split a pair of games in October at Colorado Springs, Colo.

UW will be attempting to rebound from a pair of setbacks to the Buffaloes, who won 5-1 and 11-3 last weekend in a pivotal series between two of the top five teams in the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division III Pacific Region.

Following the losses, the Cowboys slipped from No. 4 to No. 5 in the regional rankings. Northern Arizona University (20-2) remains No. 1, followed by Dordt College of Iowa (17-4), Colorado (13-4-1) and College of the Canyons of California (12-3).

Against the Buffaloes, Willie Forbes (Casper), Cody Leeper (Jackson), Craig Luplow (Banner) and Shawn Rockey (Rock Springs) scored goals for UW. Ryan Allred (Laramie), Graham Barrett (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Erik Blomberg (Parker, Colo.) and Brandon Moore (Littleton, Colo.) recorded assists.

UW sweeps MWC swim & dive honors

For the third time this season, University of Wyoming diver Tyler Miller was named Mountain West Conference diver of the week on the men’s side. Freshman Marshall Dilworth earned men’s MWC swimmer of the week award.

Tyler Miller, a senior from Greeley, Colo., won three of four diving events over the weekend. He won both of the springboard events at Utah, scoring 309.60 points on the 1-meter and 320.93 on the 3-meter. Miller also won the 1-meter springboard at BYU after posting a personal-best score of 329.78.

Dilworth, a native of Peoria, Ariz., won six individual events and two relays in meets at Utah and BYU. On Friday, he finished first against Utah in the 100-yard backstroke in 52.77 seconds), as well as in the 200-yard backstroke (1:53.14) and 200-yard individual medley (1:56.60). He also swam the lead-off leg for Wyoming’s 200-yard medley relay that won in 1:33.62. On Saturday, Dilworth won the 100 back in 50.88, 200 back in 1:51.52, and 200 IM in 1:54.91. He also led-off the 200-medley relay that won in 1:32.64 to help the Pokes capture their first dual meet victory over BYU in 21 years.

BYU’s sophomore Aleesha Miller earned women’s swimmer of the week honors, while teammate Ava Jackman and TCU’s Jennifer Ferguson were co-divers of the week on the women’s side.

UW Nordic skiers sweep opening meet

The University of Wyoming Nordic ski teams swept their respective divisions in the recent opening competition at Snow Mountain Ranch, near Granby, Colo.

The Cowboys captured the top three positions to earn a team-low six points while the Cowgirls matched the same point total and place finishers.

Eliah Pederson, freshman, Lander; Daniel Lewis, junior, Jackson; and Matt Hall, freshman, Casper, took the top three positions in the 7.5 kilometer (km) classic race. Also placing among the top 10 for the UW men's team were Michael Fitzgerald, sophomore, Laramie; and Adam Karges, sophomore, Grand Rapids, Minn.

Taking the first three places in the women's competition were UW team members Gwynn Barrows, junior, Laramie; Gracey Lewis, freshman, Jackson; and Kari Boroff, senior, Daniel. Marie Cartwright, sophomore, Lander; Shannon Wilson, junior, Casper; and Ava Bell, graduate student, Laramie, were sixth through eighth place to finish in the top 10.

The next day, both UW cross country ski teams swept the 15km skate race at Devil's Thumb Ranch near Fraser, Colo. This will be the site of the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) Nationals in March. Both the UW men and women placed third at last season's USCSA Nationals.

The Cowboys scored a team-low 10 points to capture first place, while the UW women again scored a half dozen points to win their division in the 15km race.

Individually, Pederson placed first overall to lead the Cowboys. UW men then took the fourth through eighth places. Fitzgerald placed fourth followed by Cowboy teammates Grigory Kolesov, graduate student from Russia, Hall, Justin Kinner, junior, Casper; and Lewis.

Barrows, Lewis and Boroff again paced the Cowgirls in the 15km women's competition by sweeping the top three positions. Cartwright and Wilson were fifth and sixth place, respectively, followed in order by Morgan Cropsey, freshman, Casper; Bell; and Catherine Schmidt, freshman, Laramie.

UW thinclads compete in Lincoln

As expected, the University of Wyoming track and field teams were a little rusty coming off the holiday break, as they competed in the Big 12/Mountain West Conference Challenge on Saturday in Lincoln, Neb.

“We knew it was going to take some time to get back into the competition mode, but we made some nice strides today,” said UW head coach Don Yentes. “As a team, we need to learn how to be aggressive and smarter on the track, and that comes with the young team we have.”

The Cowboys were led by their returning All-American, senior Jake Shanklin, with his second-place finish in the 35-pound weight throw. Shanklin who already has a NCAA provisional qualifying throw, took second to the redshirt senior Chris Rohr from Missouri, who like Shanklin was an All-American at the NCAA Finals.

“We have been working Jake very hard as of late, training with the heavy ball and now is not when we want him to peak,” said assistant coach Paul Barrett. “He was technically off just a little, he will get there. It was nice for him to get back to competing against some of the best in the nation.”

As for the rest of the Pokes, junior Kekoa Chavez ran well in the 400-meter dash with his season best time of 50.42 seconds, good for third place. Wyoming sophomore Greg Miller placed second in the 5,000-meter run in 14:58 and junior John Alderson, finished in the triple jump, with his leap of 47-feet, 4 1/4 inches.

“Greg ran a very solid race for us today as we try to re-group and re-focus this men’s team,” said Yentes. “We had a few nice performances and some guys that were close but not good enough to win.”

The Cowgirls were led by sophomore Amanda Aimone, who took second in the 20-pound weight throw at 57-9 3/4. just three feet shy of first place. Junior Emily Higgins had a solid first meet this season with a third-place finish in both the 1,000-meter run and 1-mile run. Newcomer Afiya Walker gave the Cowgirls a solid effort in the 600-yard run ,with her second-place finish, just seven-tenths behind Leslie Farmer of Missouri.

The three teams from the MWC, (Colorado State, Air Force and Wyoming) came up short as they were beat by the Big 12 (Missouri, Kansas State and Nebraska) 249-118.

“We have a number of very talented athletes on both teams and we will bounce back from this weekend and look forward to traveling to Colorado Springs for the Air Force Quad next Saturday,” said Yentes.

The Air Force Quad will begin at 10 a.m. with the field events while the track events will start at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Cowboy swimmers get rare win against BYU

PROVO, Utah -- The Wyoming Cowboy swimming and diving team earned a huge victory on Saturday afternoon, as they defeated BYU, 183-117 -- the win over the Cougars in 21 years.

"It’s a great day for current and former Cowboy swimmers," said UW head coach Tom Johnson. "It was a total team effort today and the men really wanted this win and swam like it. Its a great win for the seniors, underclassmen, and former UW swimmers."

The Pokes were led by freshman Marshall Dilworth, who won three individual events, and one relay race. Dilworth led off on the 200 medley relay, won the 100 backstroke (50.88 seconds), 200 backstroke (1:51.52) and 200 IM (1:54.91). Other Cowboys that won events were Brandon Fischer, in the 100 breaststroke (56.48); Matt Urich, in the 200 (1:52.62) and 100 butterfly (49.57); Alex Larkin, in the 200 breaststroke (2:04.72) and the 400 freestyle relay team (3:04,84).

The Cowboys advance to 11-1 overall, 3-1 in conference, while BYU falls to 5-4, 3-3 in the league.

On the women’s side, the Cowgirls fall to 8-3 overall and 2-3 in the MWC with a 188-111defeat. With the victory, the BYU women (16-1, 7-0) secured the regular season MWC title.

"The women swam, well especially Lesley Young and Aimee Stinson. They had some of the fastest times today they have had all season," Johnson said.

Young placed first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.02, while Stinson finished first in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:21.46.

The UW divers continued their success as they won three of the four boards at the meet. Stephanie Ortiz led the way by winning both the one-meter (302.49 points) and three-meter (308.70). This season, Ortiz has not lost on the three-meter board in a dual meet. For the Cowboys, Tyler Miller won the one-meter event after posting a personal best score of 329.78.

"The divers were terrific and they took us over the top in this meet," Johnson said. "It was a great day for the men’s team and we will gear up for our next meets."

The Cowgirl swimmers will be on the road for their next meet against San Diego State next Saturday at 1 p.m. The UW diving team will also be on the road next weekend as they compete at the Air Force Invite.

UW swimmers split against Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah- In the first of two Mountain West Conference dual meets this weekend, the UW swimming and diving team split against the University of Utah on Friday. The Cowboys defeated the Utes, 175-123, while the Cowgirls lost 165-135.

With the victory, the Cowboys advance to 10-1 overall, and 2-1 in the MWC while the Utah men fall to 0-7 overall, and 0-3 in conference. On the women’s side the Utah women improve to 10-1-1 overall, 4-1-1 in the league, while the Cowgirls fall to 8-2, and 2-2 in the MWC.

“Overall, it was a good meet for us on both sides. The Utah men gave us everything they had but we were able to get the win,” said UW head coach Tom Johnson. “The Cowgirls were ahead at the first part of the meet, but didn’t have enough firepower at the end.”

The Cowboys started the meet off on the right foot by winning the 200 medley relay with a season best time of 1 minutes, 32.62 seconds. The Pokes were led by Marshall Dilworth who won three events in the 100 backstroke (52.77), 200 backstroke (1:53.14), and 200 IM (1:56.60). Other event winners were Eli Bell (200 freestyle, 1:42.57), Kyle Wemhoff (500 freestyle, 4:41.74), Matt Urich (100 butterfly 50.20) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:07.84).

Aimee Stinson led the way for the Cowgirls by winning back-to-back races in the 1,000 freestyle (10:33.42), and 200 freestyle (1:55.38). Other winners for the Cowgirls were Lesley Young in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.80), and Stephanie Vint in the 200 butterfly (2:08.27).

“The men swam very well individually and in both relays. Marshall Dilworth was great, Matt Urich had his fastest time of the season in the 100 butterfly, and Kyle Wemhoff did an incredible job in the 500 freestyle,” Johnson said. “For the women, it might have been the best we have swam yet. Krista and Carol Jones swam the best they have this season, and for Aimee (Stinson) to win back-to-back events was huge for us early in the meet.”

On the diving boards, both Stephanie Ortiz and Tyler Miller won two events each. Ortiz’s score on the one-meter board was 284.77 points, and 292.13 on the three-meter, while Miller scored 309.60 on one-meter, and 320.93 at three-meter.

The UW swimmers and divers will swim their second dual meet of the weekend Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. in Provo.

UW hockey splits weekend games

The University of Wyoming hockey club returned from a six-week holiday break last weekend, beating Iowa State University and losing to Creighton University.

Graham Barrett (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored a pair of power-play goals -- including the game winner at the 6:59 mark of the third period -- to boost the Cowboys to a 3-2 triumph Saturday night over the Cyclones.

After busing about 170 miles from Ames, Iowa, to Omaha, Neb., and sleeping but a few hours, UW fell 6-3 Sunday morning to the Bluejays despite two goals by Erik Blomberg (Parker, Colo.).
The Cowboys face a pair of pivotal games this weekend against the University of Colorado, the No. 3 team in the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division III Pacific Region. UW is ranked fourth.

The two teams face off at 5:15 p.m. Friday in Boulder, Colo., and at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Laramie Community Ice Arena. The Buffaloes are coming off a weekend sweep of Iowa State and Creighton.

"We need to come out strong against a tough opponent this weekend," Cowboys Coach Shawn Rockey says. "With them being ranked third and us fourth, there's going to be a real sense of urgency to win these two games."

Following their hard-fought win over the Cyclones, the Cowboys only got about four hours of rest before taking the ice against the Bluejays.

"We just weren't ready to play," Rockey says. "The lack of sleep and all the travel made it really tough on us."

In an attempt to offset the loss of two key offensive players, Tad Bernet (Katy, Texas) and David Wells (Rock Springs), both of whom graduated following the fall semester, Rockey (Rock Springs) has become a player-coach this semester. He netted his first goal in a losing effort against Creighton.

Against Iowa State, Blomberg had a goal and an assist and Elliott Bauder (Douglas), Robert Kola (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Luke Walker (Jackson) recorded assists.

Cowboy wrestlers win three duals

The Wyoming wrestling team made its furthest road trip of the season a good one, as the Cowboys defeated the Duke Blue Devils, Liberty Flames and North Carolina State Wolfpack in dual action on Saturday.

To begin their day, the Cowboys beat the Flames 44-3 on a neutral mat in Raleigh, N.C. The ‘Pokes then remained at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh and wrestled the Wolfpack, winning 26-16. Finally, a 30-minute bus ride to Durham, N.C., saw UW defeat the Blue Devils, 36-6.

Wyoming had numerous notable performances, led by five Cowboys who had 3-0 records on the day. Redshirt freshman Michael Martinez was unbeaten at 125 pounds, as were juniors Cory VomBaur (133) and Alex Rieder (165), redshirt freshman Joe LeBlanc (184) and true freshman Jacob Scharbrough at heavyweight. Both Rieder and Scharbrough had two of their victories by fall.

Wyoming is now 7-2 in dual meets this season. Liberty falls to 5-6-1, while N.C. State is 3-7-1. Liberty and N.C. State tied 22-22 following their respective duals with the ‘Pokes. The Cowboys handed Duke their first loss of the season and the Blue Devils are now 5-1. Duke had beaten N.C. State earlier this week 26-22.

The Cowboys will be off from competition next weekend before hosting two home duals the following Friday and Saturday. Wyoming will begin the Western Wrestling Conference portion of their schedule when they take on South Dakota State in Laramie on Jan. 30. They will then face WWC foe North Dakota State the following evening, Jan. 31. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m. in the UniWyo Sports Complex.

UNLV sweeps UW swimmers

The Wyoming swim and dive teams suffered their first dual losses of the season on Saturday at home against UNLV.

The UNLV men defeated the Cowboys 140-103, while the Cowgirls lost 134.5-108.5. The Cowboys are now 9-1 overall, 1-1 in the MWC, while the Cowgirls fall to 8-1 overall, 2-1 in the league. With the win the Rebel men advance to 5-0 overall and 4-3 overall on the women’s side.

“I commend UNLV for swimming great and being prepared for us,” said UW head coach Tom Johnson. “We fell behind early in the 200 medley relay and 1000 freestyles and couldn’t catch back up.”

On the diving boards, Stephanie Ortiz won both the one-meter (291.52 points) and three-meter (306.30) diving events for the Cowgirls. The Cowboys also swept both boards, with Mark Murdock winning the three-meter with a score of 360.97 and Tyler Miller posting a score of 295.05 to win the one-meter.

In the pool, the UNLV women won the first two events and jumped ahead early. The three individual event winners for the Cowgirls were Stephanie Vint in the 200 freestyle (1 minute, 53.64 seconds), Cassie Stelow in the 50 freestyle (23.77) and Shelby Bull in the 100 freestyle (53.35).

The UNLV men also were able to jump to an early lead and won all but two events. Individual winners for the Pokes were senior Eli Bell in the 200 freestyle (1:42.74) and Marshall Dilworth in the 200 backstroke (1:53.18).

“Our divers looked amazing as usual today, but we lost too many close races,” Johnson said. “We need to put this one away and get ready for two big meets next weekend.”

The UW swimming and diving team will remain in MWC dual meets next weekend on the road. On Friday, UW will take on Utah at 5 p.m., and BYU on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Before the start of the meet seven seniors were honored. Krista Jones, Aimee Stinson, Eli Bell, Devin Hougardy, Alex Larkin, Tyler Miller, and Matt Urich competed in their last dual meet in Corbett Pool.

Cowboys go 1-2 at National Duals

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – With aspirations of getting to the top themselves in the near future, the Wyoming Cowboy wrestling team got a first-hand view of the best in the nation on Saturday at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA)/Cliff Keen National Duals.

UW wrestled three dual matches and was 1-2.

The Cowboys (4-2) faced No. 1 Iowa in the opening round and lost 38-3. Then, in the preliminary round of the consolation bracket, Wyoming matched up with the Buffalo Bulls and earned a 24-10 victory. Next up for UW was the No. 16 Boise State Broncos, who ended the Cowboys’ tournament by a score of 24-15.

The dual with Boise State showed how far the Wyoming team has come this season, as last year BSU beat UW by a score of 38-3.

“We fought hard against Iowa and didn’t lay down, so I wasn’t disappointed in our effort,” said Wyoming head coach Mark Branch. “Then we came back and wrestled better than we have all year against Buffalo and went hard against Boise State. Overall, we showed some toughness and it was a great experience. The guys got to see some of the things I’ve been talking about all season and some of them made some good progress. Today was not about wins and losses, but about working towards our goal of being better at the end of the season.

“Cole (Dallaserra) had a huge win against Boise State and Jacob (Scharbrough) finally had an outstanding match (vs. Buffalo). Michael (Martinez) wrestled well all day.”

Against Iowa and in front of a pro-Hawkeye crowd, Martinez was the only bright spot for the Cowboys. Martinez earned a 6-4 win at 125 pounds against the Hawkeyes’ J.J. Krutsinger.

The ‘Pokes got better results versus Buffalo, winning seven of 10 matches. Three of UW’s victories were by major decision. Martinez (125) got his second win of the day, 10-1 over Dan Bishop. Junior Cory Vombaur followed suit at 133 pounds with a 9-1 major decision over Taylor Golba. True freshman Jacob Scharborough also earned a decision by eight points or more, 12-4 over Nate Rock. Senior Eric Coxbill (157), junior Alex Rieder (165), as well as redshirt freshmen No. 17 Shane Onufer (174) and No. 10 Joe LeBlanc (184) all earned wins by decision over their Bulls’ opponents.

Martinez saved his best for last and won his third match of the day against Boise State, a 5-3 upset victory in the 125-pound weight class over No. 18 Brian Owen. As a team, the ‘Pokes had three wins by decision and one by forfeit against the Broncos. At 141 pounds, Dallaserra got a win for Wyoming over Cory Fish, 5-3, and at 197 pounds UW true freshman Alfonso Hernandez had an 8-3 decision over Ryan Allen. Scharborough won by forfeit at heavyweight.

The Cowboys will wrestle three duals in one day again next Saturday, facing UW will Duke, Liberty and North Carolina State in Raleigh and Durham, N.C.

Cowboys draw No. 1 ranked Iowa

The Wyoming wrestling team knew it was going to be in for a battle when it was invited to compete in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA)/Cliff Keen National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

That is now an understatement, as the Cowboys drew defending national champion and current No. 1 ranked Iowa in its first round match at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

Of eight seeded schools, Iowa has the top spot at the 2009 National Duals and rightfully so, as they are undefeated this season (10-0) and are the event’s defending DI team champion. Minnesota had won the title the previous two years, 2006 and 2007.

“This is a great opportunity for us to wrestle a program (Iowa) with so much tradition and success,” stated Wyoming head coach Mark Branch. “They are the defending national champions and are at the top of their game right now. I have a lot of respect for their program and our guys will get a chance to see what they are all about. The deck will be stacked against us at a lot of weights, but winning starts when you believe that anything is possible.

“I am not looking at this bracket and thinking about how many duals we can try to win. The focus for our team will be about whether we can make some huge strides individually. This kind of high-quality event is just the type of environment where that can happen and we hope to have some guys continue to progress and improve.”

Wyoming has dual wins this season over Cal State Fullerton, Columbia and Stanford. The strength in UW’s lineup has come in the upper weights where redshirt freshmen Joe LeBlanc and Shane Onufer have attracted national attention. LeBlanc is 26-4 and ranked No. 9 in the country at 184 pounds, while Onufer leads the team in wins with a mark of 28-5 at 174 pounds. Onufer is ranked No. 17 in the latest Intermat/NWCA poll. Both Cowboys have placed in large tournaments this season, LeBlanc earning the runner-up spot at the Las Vegas Invite and third at the Reno Tournament of Champions, while Onufer was seventh in Las Vegas and third in Reno.

Nine of 10 probable Iowa wrestlers are ranked in the Top 20 nationally, including two that are No. 1 and two that are No. 2. Senior Alex Tsirtsis (141 pounds) and junior Brent Metcalf (149) are tops in their weight class, with senior Charlie Falck (125) and Jay Borschel (174) in the two-slot. Metcalf was the 2008 NCAA champion at 149 pounds.

Iowa won the only previous meeting with Wyoming, 21-6 in 1958.

The National Duals, a 16-team, double-elimination event is widely regarded as the head-to-head dual national championship in collegiate wrestling. The tournament will run Saturday and Sunday. Over the course of those two days, the NWCA also hosts dual championships for Division II, III, NAIA and NJCAA schools at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls.

Division I schools participating in this year’s dual championship are No. 1 ranked Iowa, No. 2 Iowa State, No. 3 Cornell, No. 4 Nebraska, No. 5 Missouri, No. 6 Ohio State, No. 9 Wisconsin, No. 11 Minnesota, No. 14 Penn State, No. 16 Boise State, No. 17 Michigan, No. 19 Indiana, No. 20 Northwestern, No. 21 Northern Iowa, Buffalo and Wyoming.

This is the first time since the event began in 1989 that the Cowboys have been included in the select field of 16.

Following the match with Iowa, Wyoming will wrestle again on Saturday at noon (MT). Its second round opponent will be either Buffalo or the eight-seed Minnesota.

Results will be available at unipanthers.com throughout the tournament. Takedown Wrestling Radio will also broadcast portions of the tournament at Takedownradio.com.

Cowboys win two duals

The Wyoming Cowboy wrestlers leaned on the extra points from big individual victories on Sunday afternoon and recorded dual victories over Cal State Fullerton and Columbia in the three-team Sunshine Wrestling Duals at Cal State Fullerton.

In their first match-up, the Cowboys beat the host Titans, 20-15, then held on to beat the Lions, 21-18. Fullerton later beat Columbia, 24-10.

In each dual, Wyoming split matches with their opponents, winning five bouts apiece. However, the difference in the duals came from decisive Cowboy victories, a technical fall (five points) and pin (six) against Fullerton, and a pin (six) and injury default win (six) against Columbia.

Wyoming is now 3-0 in dual meets while Fullerton is 5-3 and Columbia is 0-5.

“We had some nice individual wins today, but also some bad losses,” said Wyoming head coach Mark Branch. “Both duals were really up and down. I am pleased that we came away with two dual wins, but that is not our focus. Our focus is to get better every day and we did show progress in some of our matches, but in others we struggled with the same issues we’ve had all year. I really have mixed feelings about our results today.

“Both duals came down to (Alex) Rieder’s match and in his first time this year down at 165 pounds he really made an important adjustment for this team. It worked to our advantage to start the duals at 174 pounds, so I was pleased that Shane (Onufer) was more aggressive in his second match and Joe (LeBlanc) had two dominating performances. Cory’s (VomBaur) matches were the best that I have seen him wrestle since I’ve been here.”

In the Fullerton dual, the 165-pound bout proved decisive when Rieder pinned senior Devin Velasquez at the 2:14 mark. The final match of the dual and with the team result hanging in the balance, Fullerton leading 15-14, Rieder earned a first period reversal, then worked hard on top to get the fall and hand UW a team win.

LeBlanc, ranked No. 9 nationally, scored 11 team points at 184 pounds with a technical fall victory, 17-1, over the Titan’s Alan Reynel and a win by injury default over the Lion’s Cary Aldrich. LeBlanc jumped out to an early lead before Aldrich dislocated his right elbow in the first period.

To begin each dual, the ‘Pokes also got wins from Onufer at 174 pounds. The No. 17 ranked Onufer beat Fullerton’s Todd Noel by a score of 10-3 and then pinned Columbia’s Mike Wolfer in the second period.

A key bout in the Wyoming-Fullerton match occurred at 197 pounds. The Titans’ John Drake held a 3-1 lead and riding time advantage with about 30 seconds remaining. As Drake and Wyoming true freshman Alfonso Hernandez were about to go out of bounds, Hernandez got a takedown and a near fall to pull out a 6-3 victory. That gave UW an 11-0 lead. After losses at heavyweight and 125 pounds, Cowboy junior Cory VomBaur scored a huge upset at 133 pounds when he beat two-time NCAA qualifier and No. 16 ranked T.J. Dillashaw by a score of 4-2. Wyoming would then lose three straight (141, 149, 157) before Rieder’s pin settled the dual in favor of the Cowboys.

Again Wyoming jumped out to an early lead against Columbia, a 12-0 lead after Onufer and LeBlanc’s wins. The teams split the next six matches to leave the score 21-9 going into the last two matches. The Lions would take the final two weight classes, by pin and decision, but UW had built a big enough lead to win by three points. Michael Martinez (125), VomBaur and Cole Dallaserra (141) all earned victories by decision for the Cowboys in that match.

The dual wins on Sunday avenged two losses from last season for the ‘Pokes. During the 2007-08 season, UW lost to Cal State Fullerton in Laramie, 33-10. The Cowboys also lost to Columbia last season, 26-13 at the Lone Star Duals.

Wyoming’s next competition will be on a grand national scene as they travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Saturday and Sunday to wrestle in the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals. Full brackets and UW’s first round opponent will be announced early this next week. The 16-team, double-elimination event is widely regarded as the head-to-head dual national championship in collegiate wrestling.

UW swimmers return to action

The University of Wyoming swim team was back in action at the UC Irvine Invite Saturday afternoon in Irvine, Calif. The meet was held outdoors and split into two different sections, sprint and distance events.

The Cowboys placed first in both the sprint and distance events, while the Cowgirls took first in the distance races, and third in the sprint events.

“The meet started out slow for us, but as the meet progressed and the temperature got warmer we performed a lot better,” said UW head coach Tom Johnson. “The temperature started at 59 degrees, but got warmer as the meet went on. I thought the distance events went well for us today, especially the 500 freestyle and the 400 IM.”

In the sprints, the Pokes were led by freshman Marshall Dilworth, who won both the 200 IM (1minute, 58.61 seconds) and the 200 backstroke (1:55.70). Other event winners were Eli Bell in the 200 freestyle (1:43.28) and Brandon Fischer in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 1:43.28.

At the distance events, the Cowboys won three of the four races. Dilworth won his third event of the day in the 400 IM with a time of 4:10.77. Senior Matt Urich took first in the 500 freestyle (4:41.67), while Brett Henehan won the 1650 freestyle (16:21.90).

The Cowgirls were led by senior Aimee Stinson who won both the 500 (5:00.44) and 1650 (17:20.72) freestyles. At the sprint events, junior Cassie Stelow had a first place finish by winning the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.43, while Kelsey Conci won the 50 backstroke (27.34).

“Overall, we need to continue to train hard and improve so we can be ready for UNLV and the rest of our meets this season,” Johnson said.

The Cowboys and Cowgirls will remain in Irvine to train until Friday. The next meet for UW will be Jan.17 against UNLV in Corbett Pool at noon.
