Cowgirl swimmers route Lobos

The Wyoming Cowgirl swimming and diving team had its first home meet in Corbett Pool on Friday night and earned its first Mountain West Conference victory of the season, with an 158-83 win over over New Mexico. The Cowgirls advanced to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the MWC. New Mexico falls to 2-5 and 1-1

“Tonight was a great team effort by everyone. We swam well and the divers were awesome as usual,” said UW head coach Tom Johnson. “We dominated in the 200 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke, but I also saw room for improvement.”

The Cowgirls got a quick start in ther meet by placing first and second in the 400-yard medley relay and Aimee Stinson (10 minutes, 40.18 seconds) and Carol Jones (10:56.30) placed first and second in the 1,000 freestyle.

Other Cowgirls winning events were Stephanie Vint (200 freestyle, 1:55.02), Cassie Stelow (50 freestyle, 23.86), Lesley Young (200 IM, 2:12.55 and 100 breaststroke 1:05.62), Stephanie Ortiz (three-meter 283.28, and one-meter 300.22), Kelsey Conci (100 backstroke, 58.60), Aimee Stinson (500 freestyle, 5:14.01), and the 200 freestyle relay team (1:37.17).

“Kelsey Conci did a great job again in the 100 backstroke and helped us greatly in the relays,” said Johnson. “Cassie Stelow won the 50 freestyle, and in the 100 freestyle swam very smart.”

Senior Stephanie Ortiz set a Corbett Pool record and the school record in the one-meter dive with a six-dive total of 300.22 points.

“It is a great accomplishment for Stephanie to do that in one outing,” said UW diving coach Ben Herdt. “She has been training hard all year and throughout the summer. It’s great to see her hard work paying off.”

Both the Cowboys and Cowgirls will take on the Colorado School of Mines Saturday in Corbett Pool at 1 p.m.
