BYU edges Cowgirls 1-0

BYU used a late second-half goal to edge the Cowgirls 1-0 Saturday at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.

The match was the last regular-season game of the season for Wyoming, and the last home game for six Cowgirl seniors-- Tanya Halliday, Laine Hubbard, Amanda Lathrop, Jamie Scarcliff, Corey Theiman and Tamika Wilson.

"I want to thank our six seniors. They showed great leadership this year and really helped us," said UW head coach Danny Sanchez. "The past two weekends we have played our best soccer against the best two teams in the conference, but we weren’t able to get results."

The first half was a back and forth battle and both teams had equal possession. Wyoming took four shots and the Cougars took five. UW goalkeeper Scarcliff made three saves to keep the score tied at zero at halftime.

In the second half, the Cowgirls had great opportunities, but were not able to score. Near the 26th minute, Nichole Rice took a header that made BYU goalie McKinzie Olson make a great save. Ten minutes later, Lathrop took a shot from the left side of the box that crossed to the right side of the goal, but was too high to find the net.

The BYU goal came late in the second half at the 79:33 mark. Jessica Carter took a shot that Scarcliff couldn’t handle and the ball dropped in for the one and only goal in the game. It was the first goal of the season for Carter.

"BYU is the best team in the conference and deserve the number one seed in the conference tournament. I am disappointed for the seniors and the whole team because we battled hard, we just weren’t able to get that goal we needed," Sanchez said.

Wyoming out shot BYU 9-7 in the game and took four corner kicks to the Cougars two.
