AUBURN, Wash. -- In an effort to maintain and strengthen their ties to the Evergreen state, the University of Wyoming wrestlers departed from the norm and traveled to the Pacific Northwest on Thursday night to dual Simon Fraser on a neutral mat.
UW wrestled aggressively and easily won the matchup, 42-0. The Simon Fraser University Clan is an NAIA institution located in British Columbia, Canada.
Wyoming’s season dual record is now 10-2.
The match was held in front of a pro-Wyoming crowd of nearly 400 at the Vision Quest Sport and Fitness athletic club in the Auburn SuperMall. Four Wyoming team members who participated in the dual have Washington roots: Dallas Hintz (RFr.) from Ephrata, Shane Onufer (RFr.) from Auburn, Chase Smith (RFr.) from Enumclaw and Cory VomBaur (Jr.) from Evergreen/Vancouver. Cowboy freshman Eric Jones, who is redshirting this season and did not make the trip, is from Lake Tapps.
Both VomBaur, at 133 pounds and UW freshman Alfonso Hernandez, at 197 pounds had matchups against opponents who were highly-ranked at the NAIA level. VomBaur won 8-6, and Hernandez scored a takedown in the final moments to win 7-4.
Sophomore Cole Dallaserra (141) and freshman Jacob Scharbrough (hwt.) pinned their opponents, Onufer earned a 19-2 technical fall victory at 174 pounds, while Michael Martinez (125), Smith (149), Hintz (165) and Joe LeBlanc (184) all scored major decision wins.
The Cowboys will stay in the Pacific Northwest for one more day in order to wrestle the Portland State Vikings on Friday night at 8 p.m. MT. The dual will take place in Portland, Ore., at the Stott Center.
Portland State is a member of the PAC-10 in wrestling and has a 5-11 dual record. PSU and UW have had several common opponents this season, with the Vikings losing to both Cal State Fullerton (37-9) and Stanford (29-12), both teams the Cowboys have defeated. The last time Wyoming and Portland State met on the wrestling mat was Jan. 5, 2006, in Portland, with the Cowboys prevailing 42-3.
