The University of Wyoming men’s and women’s track and field teams began action at the 19th-annual Air Force Invitational at the Cadet Field House Friday in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The Cowboys were led by freshman thrower Joe Plante from Maynard, Minn., with his fifth-place finish in the 35-pound weight throw. Plante threw his personal best and his second fifth-place finish of his career.
“We are really pleased with the way Joe competed today, he continues to get better and better every day,” said head coach Don Yentes.
Junior Kekoa Chavez qualified in the 400-meter dash with his time of 49.10 seconds, with the finals scheduled for Saturday.
For the Cowgirls, senior Nikki Peterson and freshman Chantel Bernabo qualified for the finals in the 800-meter dash and 200-meter dash respectively. Peterson’s time of 2:24.74 was good for eighth-place, while Bernabo’s time of 25.84 eclipsed her season best and put her in 12th-place out of 45 competitors.
“We had some good performances today on both sides while both are still learning a lot about how meets are ran and how to compete,” said Yentes. “Training has been going very well for us as of late, now we just need to learn how to transfer that experience to the meet.”
The Cowboys and Cowgirls will have that opportunity Saturday, as they continue action at the Air Force Invitational, while the rest of the squads will compete at the Washington Husky Invitational in Seattle, Wash.
