FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- After a good start, the Wyoming Cowgirls swimming and diving team lost to rival Colorado State 174-126 on Friday evening.
The Cowgirls fall to 11-4 overall, and 3-4 in the Mountain West Conference, while CSU advances to 9-4 overall, and 6-3 in conference.
"We started out great with the fastest time we have had this season in the 200 medley relay," said UW head coach Tom Johnson. "We ran out of gas at the end, but some of the women swam really well. There were a number of close races that we could have won but didn’t."
The Cowgirls started the meet by winning the 200 medley relay with a time of 1 minute, 44.85 seconds. The next two events were also wins for the Cowgirls. Aimee Stinson won the 1,000 freestyle in 10:22.49, and Stephanie Vint won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:53.69. Stinson won her second race of the day in the 500 freestyle with a finishing time of 5:03.70.
Lesley Young also won multiple events in the 100 (1:03.93) and 200 (2:21.87) breaststrokes.
On the diving boards, Stephanie Ortiz won the one-meter board with 280.95 points and Emily Huth placed second with 271.04. On the three-meter board, Ortiz led the way for UW in second place (283.05, followed by Tiffany Izatt 278.70 and Huth 275.30.
Both the Cowboys and Cowgirls will be in action Saturday against Air Force, beginning at 1 p.m. in Colorado Springs, Colo.
