The Wyoming tennis team wrapped up the weekend against Creighton and Drake, with the Cowgirls losing both matches by identical 4-3 scores.
“We put up an intense fight all day,” said UW head coach Kati Gyulai. “It is disappointing for the ladies to come this close and have to walk away with two losses. We are anxious to get back to practice a few days before we head out to Montana.”
The day started with doubles play with Creighton earning the doubles point. The Wyoming duo of Rebecca Berger and Sarah Summerfield had a successful round against Tess Reddin and Nicole Nakoaka, winning 8-3. The second round of doubles resulted in a loss for Carly Van Hollen and Jamie Nelson, who lost to Leesa Cadwallader and Sarah Cadwallader 9-7.
Three Cowgirls succeeded in singles play. Summerfield led the way with a win against Tess Reddin, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Berger followed with a win against Lauren Mastro, 6-4, 6-3. The last win of the day was Carly Van Hollen defeating Nicole Nakaoka, 6-0, 5-7, 6-0. At the number four spot, Nelson lost to Kelsey Schmidt, 6-3, 6-0. To wrap up singles play, Chaix was defeated by Mary Pat McMullan 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
In the second match, Drake won the doubles point. Berger and Summerfield defeated Gabriela Demos and Amanda Aragon, 8-4. In the number two spot in doubles, Van Hollen and Chaix lost to Veronika Leszayova and Morgan Rainey, 8-2.
During singles play, Berger defeated Veronika Leszayova, 7-6, 7-6. Summerfield also won, 6-2, 6-3, beating Gabriela Demos. In the number three spot, Van Hollen earned a win against Morgan Rainey, 6-4, 6-4. Nelson then fell to Jessica Aguilera, 6-3, 6-3. The end of the day brought a loss for Chaix, losing to Kari Sloboth, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.
The next spring match will lead the Cowgirls to Montana to compete against Idaho on Saturday and Montana State on Feb. 15.
