The Wyoming swimming and diving teams closed out their exhibition season Friday night with impressive times in the Brown vs. Gold intrasquad meet in Corbett Pool.
The Gold squad was led by captains Stephanie Ortiz and Sam Holmes and defeated the Brown team in a close meet 290-287. Brown was led by Eli Bell and Krista Jones.
"This was one of the better exhibitions I have ever seen. There was good hard racing tonight and it was good to see that," said UW head coach Tom Johnson. "Coming in I thought Gold would be the better team but Brown did great in a lot of events and made the score very close."
One of the highlights from the event came from freshman Kelsey Conci in the 100 butterfly. With a time of 59.42 seconds, Conci nearly broke into the top 10 in school history in her first ever meet.
"Kelsey was amazing tonight. It was great to see someone in their first collegiate meet nearly break into the top ten in school history," Johnson said. "I was also very pleased with the men’s 100 back and feel like we are balanced in many areas."
In the men’s 100 backstroke, two freshmen finished first and second. Marshall Dilworth won with Tyler Kybartas close behind.
"We filled a lot of places with great recruiting and that showed tonight. On the women’s side I think we need to get healthier and stay that way for the year. If we can do that we will win a lot of meets," Johnson added.
Gold team captain Ortiz led the way on the diving boards, winning the one-meter and teammate Emily Huth also was helped in the win for the Gold team as she took first in the three meter. On the men's side another Gold player was Tyler Miller who won both the one-meter, and three meter.
The Wyoming swimming and diving team will begin the 2008-09 season on Oct. 11, as they travel to Denver to take part in the Denver Relays.
