A late second-half goal was enough for the Wyoming Cowgirls to open Mountain West Conference play with a tough 1-0 win over Air Force Friday at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.

The win was also the first MWC victory for first-year head coach Danny Sanchez.

The only score of the game came at the 55-minute mark. After a loose ball rolled out to the 45-yard mark, senior Laine Hubbard came up and put a hard shot on net as it knuckled past the diving Ariana Green of Air Force to put the Cowgirls in the lead for good. It was Hubbard’s second goal on the season and fourth of her career.

"Laine played great for us today and had a big-time shot to give us the advantage," said Sanchez. "It was a typical conference battle out there and we are glad to get off to a good start."

In the first half, the Cowgirls controlled the ball and out-shot the Falcons 6-3, with three shots on goal. One of the Cowgirl opportunities in the first half came at the 33-minute mark, when senior Amanda Lathrop sent a nice lob pass over the heads of the defenders to fellow senior Tamika Wilson, who got into the box when the Falcons bent, but did not break and turned the ball away.

"In the first half, we did a nice job of creating opportunities for ourselves, we just couldn’t capitalize on them," said Sanchez.

Maybe the play of the game came with one minute left in the first half, when Air Force’s Bridgett Murphy got away from a diving Jamie Scarcliff, the Wyoming goal keeper. She sent the ball to the net when Hubbard saved the day by stopping the shot. It ended a scoreless first half.

After the Hubbard goal, the Cowgirls controlled the ball and the possession so the Falcons could not amount an attack.

"Once we had the lead, we did a really good job of limiting their opportunities and turning them away," said Sanchez.

The Cowgirls will return to non-conference play, hosting Boise State on Sunday, beginning at 1 p.m. at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
