One goal a game is apparently good enough for the Wyoming soccer team these days.
For the second straight game this weekend, the Cowgirls came out on top 1-0, this time against Boise State Sunday at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. On Friday, Wyoming beat Air Force by the same score.
After a scoreless first half, Wyoming junior Emily Layton had a great opportunity and took a shot that hit the far post. The ball came off the post to the feet of senior Amanda Lathrop, who kicked it past Bronco goalkeeper Liz Ruiz for the only score of the game.
Layton was credited with her third assist of the season, and Lathrop scored her seventh goal of the season. With the goal, Lathrop is now tied with fellow senior Tamika Wilson for second place in career goals in school history with 19.
“It was a great job by Emily to create that scoring chance and Amanda was quick to get the first goal,” Wyoming coach Danny Sanchez said. “After the goal we continued to play great defense in a second half that was back and forth.”
The Cowgirls came out strong in the first half and played great defense, only allowing two BSU shots. Wyoming had many opportunities in the first half including five corner kicks, but neither team was able to score in the first half.
“We came out with a lot of energy and created a lot of great opportunities, but unfortunately none of them went in,” Sanchez said. “Boise State is very good in the attack and we played great defense and limited their opportunities throughout the game.”
With the non-conference win, the Cowgirls improve to 7-5-1, while Boise State drops to 7-4-1.
The Cowgirls will return to conference play next weekend with two home matches against TCU on Friday at 3 p.m., and Sunday against New Mexico at noon.
“It's a whole new ballgame starting conference play again. These are both home games, so we hope some people can get out and support us. These are huge games for us,” Sanchez
said.
