Petsch finishes second

BOULDER, Colo. -- Wyoming senior Jay Petsch came away in second place Saturday in the multi-events at the Potts Invitational.

Petsch was leading after the first day and four events but slipped to second place at the conclusion of the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meter run. Petsch won the hurdle event with a time of 8.53 seconds, tied for third in the pole vault at 13-feet, 5 1.4 inches and was fourth in the 1,000-meter run with a personal best time of 2:59.64. He scored 4,974 points, just 21 points shy of his personal best.

“Jay had a good weekend and unfortunately left quite a few points on the board,” said assistant coach Quincy Howe. “This is the only time we can get the kids a multi-event before they go to conference in late February, so it was good to get them the experience.”

Petsch was joined by sophomore Henry Ferreira, who finished the two-day heptathlon in fifth with a personal best 4,267 points. Henry competed well and finished the day strong with a third-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles and fifth-place finish in the 1,000-meter run.

“Henry has a lot of potential, and along with Jay, left quite a few points on the board, but with time Henry will get there,” said Howe. “We got exactly what we wanted to get out of this weekend and I couldn’t be happier heading into the bulk of our schedule.”

The UW track team returns to action on Jan. 30, in Colorado Springs, Colo., to take on the Air Force Academy.
