Cowboy hockey sweeps Colorado College

The University of Wyoming hockey club, fronted by Erik Blomberg and Michael Leriger, swept two American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) games against Colorado College last weekend.

The Cowboys overwhelmed the Tigers 11-4 Friday at the Laramie Community Ice Arena and 12-2 Saturday at the Taco John's Events Center in Cheyenne to improve their record to 15-7 this season.

Blomberg (Parker, Colo.) netted three goals in Friday's contest and added two more in the series finale, boosting his season point total to 25, one behind Mitch Nelson (Sheridan) for the team lead.

Leriger (Houston, Texas) recorded a goal and an assist in both victories for UW, ranked sixth in the ACHA's Pacific Region.

Willie Forbes (Casper) and T.J. Peters (Jackson) had two goals apiece in Friday's victory, and Nelson, Elliott Bauder (Douglas) and Tyler Yorke (Houston, Texas) also scored goals in the series opener.

Kenny Ainsworth (Casper) stopped 31 of 35 shots to earn the victory between the pipes.
A pair of club newcomers, Mitch Barker (Powell) and Matt Moore (Casper), sparked the Cowboys in Saturday's triumph. Both players scored two goals apiece in the opening two periods as UW surged to a 9-2 advantage.

Cody Leeper (Bondurant) also had two goals, and Nelson, Rick Comer (Gillette) and Taylor Freeman (Parker, Colo.) each had one goal.

In goal, Sean Collins (Cheyenne) made 14 saves for his second victory in two collegiate starts.

UW plays three games this week, beginning with a 7 p.m. matchup Friday against the University of Colorado (12-8) at the Taco John's Events Center. The Cowboys play Mesa State College (7-17-1) the following two days, at 7 p.m. Saturday in Laramie and at 11 a.m. Sunday in Cheyenne.
