DENVER -- The University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team played their first regular season game of 2009 on Saturday and fell to Denver 1-0 on a neutral field.
The first half was an even battle with no goals scored. DU took five shots, three on goal, while the Cowgirls took three shots and one on goal.
DU midfielder Kelli Breidenbach scored at the 56:40 mark that proved to be the game winner. Lizzy Carlson was credited with the assist.
Senior Emily Layton and freshman Oliva Mohtadi led Wyoming with three shots each. Juniors Bostyn Burger and Katie Amsberry added two shots. Freshman Courtney Merkle made her first career start at goalkeeper and made four saves.
The Cowgirls will return home and play their home opener against Hartford Friday. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex
