Smith and Howe were named Wednesday to the Mountain West Conference announced its 10th Anniversary Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Teams, as selected by a combined panel of media, institutional and conference personnel and on-line fan poll.
In order to be eligible for consideration, candidates must have won an individual title at the MWC Championship and/or attained All-American status at least once in their careers.
Smith will certainly go down as one of the top Cowgirl runners in school history, as she was a five-time All-American, and a five-time MWC Champion. She currently owns the 100 and 400-meter hurdles record, as well as being a part of the record holding 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay team for the UW outdoor records. Smith also owns the second fastest time in both the 200 and 400-meter dash for UW.
“Shauna’s performance throughout her entire senior year will be tough to duplicate at this university,” UW head track coach Don Yentes said. “She got better and stronger at every meet right down to the very last race at the NCAA’s.”
During Smith’s senior year (2005), she became Wyoming's first NCAA national champion since Ryan Butler in 1996 in the 35-pound weight throw and the lone Cowgirl to accomplish the feat. Smith was the conference champion and still owns the MWC record in the 400-meter hurdles. During her freshman campaign in 2002, she was awarded the MWC Freshman of the Year award.
Howe, a current assistant coach for the Cowboys, has gained the respect of his athletes as one of the best jumpers, if not the best, in Wyoming history. Howe, who was just named to the 2009 University of Wyoming Hall of Fame, never earned All-American status outdoors, however, but was the MWC Champion three times in the triple jump. He owns eight total conference championships and was never beaten in the event during his competition in the WAC and MWC.
He currently owns Wyoming’s record in both the indoor and outdoor triple jump event, while he is sixth on the outdoor long jump list and eighth on the 110-meter hurdle list.
“What more can you say about these two extraordinary athletes, they were both dominating forces not only at the conference level but also on the national level,” said Yentes. “Quincy is such an asset to this University and program, he has done a great job preparing these student-athletes to give them a chance to have a successful career here at UW. We are lucky to have him.”
