SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The Wyoming men's golf team finished in 16th place Tuesday at the seventh annual Cowboy Classic, presented by Cleveland golf, at Talking Stick Golf Club.
“Today was another great day of college golf with some good competition and a lot of excitement,” UW head coach Joe Jensen said. “I am very thankful to everyone who made this tournament a success, especially the staff at Talking Stick Golf Club. We are also very appreciative to our sponsors: Cleveland Golf, Mix 1, Adidas and Marriott.”
UC Davis won its third consecutive Cowboy Classic and did so in record-breaking style. The Aggies posted the best tournament finish in classic history, a 15-under par 825. They also had the best team round in the history of the classic on Tuesday, a 13-under par 267. Oregon State finished second (841, +1) and UTEP finished third (842, +2).
Individually, UC Davis’ Austin Graham won the tournament with a three-round total of 204 (-6). Oregon State’s Morten Madsen finished second (205, -5), while UTEP’s Roger Sloan and UC Davis’ Nate Pistacchio tied for third (206, -4).
After two hole-in-ones during Monday’s second round, a third ace occurred on Tuesday. San Diego’s Gunner Weibe was perfect on hole No. 16, the third different hole to yield an ace in the tournament.
For the Cowboys, Tuesday’s final round yielded a 14-over par scorecard of 294. That final round gave the Pokes a tournament total of 879 (+39).
Individually, Gabe Maier and Mike May led the Cowboys in the tournament. Each player tallied a three-round scorecard of 217 (+7). That score placed each of them in a tie for 44th place.
Phil Henzlik had the best third round of any Cowboy, as he carded a one-over par 71 on Tuesday. Henzlik tied for 54th in the tournament with a three-round total of 218 (+15).
“I would have liked to see us play better today,” said Jensen. “The difference between being in 12th yesterday and 16th today is only two shots per guy during today’s round. It is that old situation where our best finisher last week is our fourth best finisher this week. That inconsistency has been the story of the spring.
“I was hoping to finish in the middle of the field which we were positioned to do, but things didn’t work out today. For the most part, I feel like good things are happening but we need to keep working and get better.”
Next up for the Cowboy golf team will be the Missouri Tiger Intercollegiate Monday and Tuesday in Columbia, Mo.
