Cowgirl tennis opens with loss to Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team opened up the spring season with a 6-0 loss against the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Friday afternoon.

“We competed well this afternoon,” said head coach Kati Gyulai. “Nebraska is a solid performer and a tough opponent to open the season. We look to carry on this energy to tomorrow and to get a couple of wins.”

In doubles play, Nebraska took both matches to earn the doubles point. The team of Jana Albers and Wiveca Swarting defeated Wyoming's Rebecca Berger and Sarah Summerfield, 8-4, while Stephanie Evans and Maria Ring earned an 8-5 victory over UW's Jamie Nelson and Carly Van Hollen.

In singles play, the Cornhuskers swept all five matches. Wiveca Swarting defeated Summerfield 7-5, 6-3, while Mary Weatherhold earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Berger. At the number three spot, UW's Van Hollen fell 6-1, 6-4 to Jana Albers, as did Nelson, 6-2, 6-3 against Stephanie Evans. To close things out, Ashley Finnegan defeated Wyoming's Carolina Chaix in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

Wyoming returns to play on Saturday against the Creighton Bluejays at 9 a.m. and the Drake Bulldogs at 3 p.m.
