Cowgirl soccer stop Utah Valley

OREM, Utah. -- The University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccer squad won its first road game of the season against Utah Valley on Friday afternoon, 2-1.

The Cowgirls advance to 3-1 on the early season, while Utah Valley falls to 0-4 overall.

The scoring for the Cowgirls started very early as senior Emma Wilson scored her first goal of the season at 1:13. The goal put Wyoming ahead early and proved to be the only goal in the first half.

"Emma (Wilson) had a great early goal" said UW head coach Danny Sanchez. "Utah Valley was able to equalize the score on a well deserved goal after putting a lot of pressure on us, but we battled back and got the second goal."

The lone Wolverine goal came on a cross from Camille Broderick that was scored by Athena Maher at the 68:32 mark. The score was even at one until Cowgirl senior Emily Layton scored an unassisted goal at 85:32 that proved to be the game winner.

"Emily (Layton) showed great determination to get that goal. It wasn’t the prettiest goal you will ever see, but she was able to get the job done," Sanchez said. "I am pleased to get results on the road and hope that continues for us."

Starting the game at goalkeeper for UW was freshman Courtney Merkle. She made a total of seven saves on 18 shots from Utah Valley. The Cowgirls took 14 shots and had five corner kicks to UVU’s one.

Wyoming will continue the road trip through the state of Utah on Sunday, taking on Utah State in Logan, Utah at 1 p.m.
