The University of Wyoming Cowgirl golf team broke yet another record as the team shot a record-breaking round of 291 (+3) and a 10th-place finish with their top event score of 891 (+27) Tuesday at the CU/Heather Farr Memorial tournament.
Nine of the top-10 low team round records have been set in the past two years for the Cowgirls, including the top two from this season. This year’s squad has played in four tournaments thus far and has broken the low event team score twice.
“I am so proud of everyone in our program, they really came together today,” said UW head coach Josey Stender. “It was a great team effort today and we put together a really solid tournament with three good rounds.”
The Cowgirls, with seven players and three rounds, they had only three total rounds in the 80s. Wyoming was once again led by true freshman Juanita Rico, who in Monday’s second round tied the best round ever played by a Cowgirl with her 69 (-3). Tuesday, she shot another sub-par 18-holes with her 71 (-1), which brought her total to 218 (+2) and a tie for 20th place.
Trailing Rico was sophomore Jenna Zamprelli, who had her best tournament in the two years she has been a Cowgirl, with her total 223 (+7). Junior Sarah Fogerty was not far behind with her 225 (+9), which was good for a tie for 42nd-place.
The Cowgirls will have two weeks to get ready for the Bronco Fall Invitational in Boise, Idaho ,on Oct. 13-14.
“We need to keep this consistent play going and continue to put three rounds together,” finished Stender.
